Obama calls for longer school year

Obama wants students to go to school longer. He says that students in America go to school a month less then students in other country. He also wants to evaluate teachers based on students' test performance. He does not want teachers to oppose this idea. Obama feels we can change the school calendar because students to not need to help their family out on their farm like in the past.
I think that a longer school year will not help students. If Obama wants to change the school calender then i think it would be a better idea to have shorter brakes but the same amount of school days. So an example would be two months of school 2 weeks off. Then students are less likely to forget the things they have learned. Students need a brake and should not be going to school all year round. this is just going to get them discouraged. students need a time to just be kids and enjoy them self. life is more then just going to school. there is so much more we can learn out of school like teamwork through sports, community service, responsibility that comes with a job, and so much more.
this involves government because school cost the government money. Obama also says that being behind in our education puts us at a disadvantage in the global economic.

  1. Agreed. If our parents wanted us to go to school longer, there are year round schools already. At the same time Obama has a good point. We do tend to forget things when we come back to school. Extended school years would help a lot when it comes to that. I also think it could make things worse for students. Because this is America and we do try an take the easy way out of things, kids would just drop out because it could be too much for them. We need breaks to refresh our minds. So an extended school year could go either way.

  2. I also agree, yet disagree. I agree because students forgetting things is obviously not good, however the drop-out rate would not increase if we were given extended/more breaks. Schools in Europe generally go all-year-round, but they have much longer breaks than us Americans. Would you rather go to school for a large chunk of the year, cramming in that last lesson all the time, or go slowly but surely over the whole year. I know people who work five days a week, with their two days off split apart. They enjoy that more than one solid chunk of work, because it makes the work seem like less of a chore. The same would apply with school. I believe students would prefer to have two weeks of vacation every couple of months, as Katie said.

  3. I agree with you, Katie. If Obama doesn't like how we teach our kids in America, he should be running one of those "other countries." I for one wouldn't mind. The way i see it is this, we are superpower and every person that is a part of this great nation enjoyed summers and regular school years. You simply cannot fix what's not broken.

  4. I agree. Going to school for a longer time is a bad idea. More students would drop out of school and, it's not just up to the teachers for students to do well in school. Students have to really try hard.

  5. I think going to school year round is insane. Just because "other countries" go year round, doesnt mean we have to follow them. We are our own country. Plus we don't like school as it is, so why extend it? Im pretty sure if he were in our shoes, he would have a different opinion on that. Everything is going fine, so there is no real reason to change it.

  6. There are already schools that go year round. But I don't believe we should. The way school is now is the way its been for years. Going to school longer would definitely discourage kids in going, more than it already does. There is already a big enough drop out rate, that we don't need to raise it. Also, if they evaluate teachers' performances based on students test rates, then that spells bad news for the teachers. Some students just do not care about school so they will fail their tests, even if the teachers are great teachers. But once again, school does not need to be longer.
